Mayor's Monthly Editorial, October 2025
Within the District of Sparwood, off-street parking restrictions come into effect each year from October 1 to March 31 from six o’clock in the morning until four o’clock in the afternoon, regardless of the weather. As the seasons shift, the Public Works Department can be required to respond to snow and ice with very little warning, as weather in our region changes rapidly. Removing vehicles from the street allows them to effectively and efficiently respond, maintaining community standards and safety.
As expected this time of year, winter is beginning to settle in. With the first snowfall behind us, conversations around snow removal are starting to surface once again. Mayor and Council would like to take this opportunity to share some key details about the District’s snow removal program and the guidelines residents should be aware of before heavier snowfalls arrive.
Over time, the snow and ice control program has evolved, with one of the most appreciated additions being the clearing of driveway windrows. While this service is well-received by the community, it does come with added costs and increased demands on crew time.
Snow and ice clearing in Sparwood follows a priority-based approach and begins when snow accumulation reaches two inches. The first areas to be addressed include major roads such as Pine Avenue, Ponderosa Drive, Aspen Drive, Red Cedar Drive, and Centennial Square. High-use municipal spaces like parking lots, sidewalks, and walkways are also prioritized. Secondary routes—including certain school bus paths, residential connectors, and sidewalks—are cleared next, followed by remaining roads and walkways. A full snow clearing cycle typically takes between eight and fourteen hours. As a result, residential streets with lighter traffic may be cleared later in the day.
Windrow removal is carried out in the same order as road and sidewalk clearing to maintain efficiency. If staffing or equipment availability is limited, some windrows may be left for the following day. It’s important to note that private parking lots and roadways are not maintained by the District—they are the responsibility of the property owner or tenant.
Safety remains our top priority. Vehicles left on the road can significantly slow down operations and create hazards for both equipment operators and other drivers. Keeping streets clear ensures that sudden ice and snow conditions can be addressed. With your cooperation we can support the Public Works crew in their efforts to continue to provide the exemplary service we have all come to know and appreciate.
