Mayor's Monthly Editorial, April 2025

April 22 2025

One of the things that Mayor and Council value most is hearing directly from our residents. In the months ahead, we will be inviting you to share your thoughts and ideas on the future of recreation in our community through various public engagement events.

Beginning this May, the Recreation Facility Advisory Committee (RFAC) will launch a comprehensive consultation process and your participation will play a key role in shaping the path forward. The first opportunity to contribute will be through a community-wide survey. This survey will be a chance to tell us what matters most to you when it comes to recreation. Whether it’s indoor sports facilities, a large community gathering space, arts and culture venues, or something entirely different, your feedback will help to determine both the needs and wants of our community.

Aside from the survey, RFAC has planned several other ways to get involved. One of the key engagement events will be a community street party taking place in June in Centennial Plaza. This will be a great opportunity to enjoy a free BBQ, socialize with friends and neighbours, chat with members of the Committee and learn more in a relaxed, family-friendly setting. Members of the RFAC will also be out and about throughout the spring and summer setting up pop-up booths at various events and locations throughout the District during the engagement period. In addition to many community activities, RFAC will also be undertaking focused feedback sessions with specific groups and demographics. The insights gathered will then help shape a vision for the future of recreation in Sparwood, helping Council to plan to meet the diverse needs of all residents today and in the years to come.

Throughout the engagement period, please take the time to complete the survey, attend an event, or stop by a pop-up booth and encourage your friends, family, and neighbours to do the same. This is your community and your input matters. Recreation facilities are places where children learn teamwork, where seniors stay active and connected, where families gather and where friendships are formed. These spaces bring us together, improve our well-being and help define who we are as a community.

Let’s work together to shape a recreational future for Sparwood that celebrates who we are, and supports a healthy, active community for all. Watch for more details coming soon at www.sparwood.ca.
