Acting Mayor's Monthly Editorial, June 2026
June has been a busy month, and I feel incredibly honored to have spent it serving as your Acting Mayor.
Coal Miner Days has come and gone, and once again our community showed what it does best. It was great to see so many people out enjoying the parade, events and spending time together. These weekends don’t just happen on their own, so I want to send a huge thank you to the Coal Miner Days Society, the volunteers, sponsors and everyone who pitched in behind the scenes. Your hard work creates memories that families will talk about for years.
And speaking of volunteers – Council will be hosting Canada Day & Volunteer Appreciation on Wednesday, July 1st from 12:00pm to 3:00pm in Centennial Plaza. The afternoon will include live music, a free BBQ & cupcakes, Kids Fest and fun games hosted by the Sparwood Fire Department. We hope you will join us for a fun afternoon.
This month also took me to both RDEK meetings and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Conference. It’s always interesting to hear what other communities are facing and bring new ideas back to Sparwood, but it’s also a good reminder that we have something pretty special here. It always amazes me to learn how much further ahead Sparwood is compared to other municipalities. We have done a really good job of planning ahead strategically to care for our infrastructure by way of robust reserve funds. Our roads alone can attest to this statement.
We also had the opportunity to place Sparwood’s new Time Capsule inside the Titan. It’s pretty amazing to think that 40 years from now, in 2066, someone will open it and get a glimpse into what life was like here in 2026. I hope they see a community that cared about each other, worked together and never lost its small-town heart.
Over the past year, the Recreation Facility Advisory Committee has conducted a wide range of engagement activities. These included surveys, focus groups, public events, and discussions with community members. Based on that feedback, several options were developed. They are now at the stage of reporting back and seeking your input before making a recommendation to Council. Please take the time to complete the survey which can be found on our website. It will only take a moment of your time.
Our 2025 Annual Report has been approved. This is a really great document that shows who we are, what we have been doing and what we plan to do in the future. It also includes Financial reporting. The report can be found on the District of Sparwood website.
