The Director of Community and Facility Services is responsible for managing the department’s daily operations and supervising a staff of 23 full time, part time, casuals and contract instructors who work closely with community groups, service clubs and not-for-profit organizations to further enhance the services provided.
It is their goal to ensure everyone living in Sparwood has access to quality programs, facilities, and parks. The department is responsible for planning, developing, maintaining, and operating all municipal parks, trails, and recreational facilities.
Oversees a network of approximately 30 km of municipal trails and 50 km of regional trails, as well as 12 parks and 15 green spaces, which include 5 playgrounds, 5 ball diamonds, 2 soccer pitches, a spray park, skate park, bike park, beach volleyball, horseshoe pitch, Bocce ball, and 4 tennis courts.
Provides recreational activities and a wide range of instructional programs through our municipally-operated facilities. The Leisure Centre and Arena Complex house a 20 metre leisure pool, racquet courts, fitness centre, a four sheet curling rink, ice arena, and community hall. The leisure pool is overseen by 2 full time, 3 part-time and 6 casual lifeguard/instructors. Programming, registrations and reception duties are overseen by 2 full time and 1 part-time position, which are supported by 2 casual cashiers. Our programs are supported by a network of between 2 and 12 instructors that provide instructional services for our daycare centre, fitness, dance, gymnastics, and art programs.
Responsible for the management of all park and recreational facility rentals owned or operated by the District. This includes providing support to 13 sports groups, 27 community organizations and 8 clubs.
Provides support to a wide range of community initiatives (including seniors’ initiatives, daycare services, early childhood development, sports groups, School District, Cross Country Ski Club and the mountain biking & trail groups) and community events (including tournaments and weddings), including managing the Community Events Fund Program.
Responsible for the maintenance of all civic facilities owned and operated by the District. These include the District Office, Engineering Office, Fire Halls, the Leisure Centre, and various other leased facilities. Our maintenance department consists of 6 full time positions and 2 casual positions.
