New Crosswalks Address Pedestrian Safety

The District of Sparwood is pleased to announce the implementation of two LED illuminated crosswalks which are now fully operational on the Pine Avenue – Aspen Drive Intersection leading to Tim Hortons and the top of Red Cedar Drive hill. These two locations have been identified as areas that have a great deal of pedestrian movement and a high volume of vehicle traffic.

“We have heard the calls from the public that these crosswalks were a necessity. There is a significant amount of people walking, especially students travelling from the school to Tim Hortons on their lunch break with vehicles travelling in and out of a busy intersection. At the top of Red Cedar Drive there is not a huge amount of visibility, especially coming from the bottom of the hill to the top, so we knew this was a priority,” says Sparwood Mayor Dave Wilks.

The illuminated crosswalks have bright LED lights and are operated using solar power. Each set of lights have dual panels to ensure batteries are charged efficiently and in an environmentally friendly manner. “We have seen a lot of success with the solar ran LED crosswalks implemented in 2017, so it just made sense to utilize them again in these locations,” says Wilks.

As always, pedestrians are reminded to not only use the push button to engage the lights, but to also make eye contact with oncoming vehicles and ensure they are at a full stop, before crossing.
