Citizen Satisfaction Survey Results

Council received a compiled report of the feedback received from the 2017 Citizen Satisfaction Survey identifying the key findings, emerging trends from the previous survey conducted in 2015, and recommendations to address the comments received from the 216 households which completed the survey.

Media Release: Smoky Skies Bulletin Expanded to include Kootenays

The Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the Interior Health Authority, has expanded the Smoky Skies Bulletin issued on Saturday 8th July due to forest fire smoke that is covering the area. The areas now covered are: Kinbasket, North Columbia, West Columbia, East Columbia Yoho Park- Kootenay Park, East Kootenay, West Kootenay, Elk Valley, Kootenay Lake, Arrow Lakes – Slocan Lake, Boundary, Okanagan, Similkameen, Nicola, Fraser Canyon, South Thompson, North Thompson, 100 Mile, Cariboo (North and South), and Chilcotin.

BC Day Garbage Pickup Schedule

There will be no garbage pickup on Monday, August 7th, 2017.

Garbage that is normally picked up on the Monday will be picked up on Tuesday, August 8th, 2017.

Campfires banned within the District of Sparwood

FRIDAY, JULY 7, 2017, SPARWOOD, BC – Effective 6:00 pm Mountain time on Friday, July 7, 2017, campfires will be prohibited throughout the Southeast Fire Centre, including the District of Sparwood, to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety.

This campfire ban will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified.

Off-Leash Dog Parks!

District of Sparwood Staff are exploring the option of creating one or more off-leash dog parks in Sparwood to provide an area for dog owners to let their dogs off-leash. We have created a survey (download the survey .pdf here!) for residents to complete so we can gather input about off-leash park(s) in Sparwood.

NOTICE OF CONSTRUCTION: MIDDLETOWN CROSSING – HIGHWAY 3/43 INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS – BC HYDRO ACCESS TRAIL

Construction activities for the access road for relocation of the overhead powerlines will commence on July 5, 2017.

Summer Swim Schedule (July 3 - August 20, 2017)

Cool off this summer at the Leisure Centre! Come out for an early morning swim, aquafit, lane swim, family swim, public swim, or free swims late afternoon on Fridays (4:00 - 5:30 pm) between July 3 and August 20, 2017.

Sparwood receives in excess of $100,000 from the Celebrate Canada Fund!

The District of Sparwood was one of many communities to receive funding from the 2017 Celebrate Canada Fund.  The $224,400 project includes $100,620 from Western Economic Diversification Canada and the Community Infrastructure Program.  Four projects at the Leisure Centre will take place in the summer and fall of 2017.  Residents will see a new pickleball and tennis court surface and a new indoor play centre at the pool.  The aquatic centre will also receive a new salt water chlorination system and hot tub filter. All four projects are made possible with funding through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program grant.

NOTICE: Alternative Approval Process for Lease Agreement with School District No. 5

The District of Sparwood has initiated an Alternate Approval Process, otherwise known as a counter-petition, to obtain elector approval to enter into a 10-Year Lease Agreement with School District #5 for 1351 Ponderosa Drive for the installation of a multi-use outdoor facility to replace the tennis and basketball courts located in the Cherrywood subdivision.

NOTICE: Road Line Painting Work

UPDATE: Note that line painting will continue until the evening of July 3. Thanks to all residents for your patience and we apologize for the inconvenience this has created.

The District of Sparwood is advising residents that road line painting work will be starting the night of June 26 and will continue each night until July 3. The District is requesting that residents please move vehicles off public roads in the evenings to avoid interfering with the line painting work. District Office Canada Day Weekend Closure

The District office will be recognizing Friday June 30th as our Canada Day Statutory Holiday and the office will be closed. We will be open as usual on Monday July 3rd – Don’t forget! Taxes are Due Tuesday July 4th, 2017. Penalties apply for any outstanding balances after July 4th.

Garbage Pickup Rescheduled - Canada Day 2017

Take Note!

There will be no garbage pickup on the Canada Day stat holiday on Friday, June 30th! Garbage that is normally picked up on Friday will be picked up on Thursday, June 29th instead!

BC Hydro Power Outage

BC Hydro requires a five-hour outage to complete maintenance work on the transformer at the Sparwood Substation. The outage is needed so they can switch the substation’s transformer.

The outage is scheduled for five hours on Sunday, June 25 from 2 to 7 am MDT.  It will affect approximately 2,700 customers in the town of Sparwood, Sparwood Heights and the Lower Elk Valley Road; Highway 3 from Sparwood Transfer Staion, east to Michel Creek Road; and north on Highway 43 to Bursato Road.

2016 Annual Municipal Report

The District of Sparwood’s 2016 Annual Municipal Report is now available for public view. The report will be presented and reviewed by Council at a special meeting on Monday, June 26, 2017 at 7:00 pm. Residents are encouraged to provide their feedback in person at the meeting or in writing to sparwood@sparwood.ca or in person at the District Office.

2017 Tax Notices

The 2017 Tax Notices have been mailed out. If you are a new owner and do not receive a tax notice by June 14, 2017, please come into the District Office to obtain a duplicate copy.

BC Hydro Columbia Operations Conference Call for General Public

BC Hydro will be providing an opportunity for their Operations Planners to share information with the general public on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 11:00 am MT (10:00 am Pacific Daylight Time) about how they are preparing for high water levels this year and planning for flood operations, if needed.  

Deadline to register is Noon on Monday, May 15, 2017.

Baby Bed Pilot Project

Children First/Success by 6 is working in partnership with Interior Health East Kootenay Public Health Nursing to pilot a project designed to promote safe sleep for infants as well as an early and meaningful connection with Public Health Nursing and community resources for first time parents in the East Kootenay.

Baby beds will be available at no cost for all families having their first baby on or after June 1, 2017 (while supplies last).

Overnight Vehicle and RV Storage!

The District of Sparwood provides overnight vehicle storage (including travel trailers, RV’s, etc.) at our impound lot for any vehicle that is parked on public park and greenbelts areas!

Costs include impoundment fees and fines ranging from $125 - $500.
