Effective 4:00 pm September 14, 2018 campfires and fire pits with permits will once again be permitted within the District. Category 2 open fires and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited throughout the District.
Mayor McDougall and area representatives attended the mining breakfast at the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) this morning. John Pumphrey, Chief Operating Officer for North Coal Ltd., spoke on their project for a new metallurgical (coking) coal mine and was a sponsor of the breakfast.
Clean Air Bylaw 1229, 2018 governs where tobacco and cannabis smoking and vaping will be allowed in Sparwood.
Council wants to hear from you as we consider if we need to amend the bylaw so that it reflects the current community views on smoking in public places. A short survey poll has been created to get input from the community on smoking and vaping in public places.

Starting September 4, the District will roll out changes to its curbside garbage collection services. All household garbage will now be collected from standard 242L bear-resistant carts which are scheduled to be delivered to residents the week of August 27.
Following 10.5 years with the District of Sparwood, Chief Administrative Officer, Terry Melcer, has announced she will be retiring in September.
Ms. Melcer joined the District of Sparwood on January 15, 2007 as the Director of Corporate Services and was appointed the Chief Administrative Officer on September 1, 2010. The District of Sparwood thanks Terry for her outstanding contribution to the community.

This is to advise that the Pedestrian Crosswalk on Highway #43 near Aspen Drive remains closed until construction of the
new pedestrian controls for the Middletown Highway 3/43 Intersection Improvements Project are completed. Detour is available under the Highway 43 Railway Overpass. More information available here.
District of Sparwood will continue to collect cash donations (cheque, debit, visa gift cards, etc.) up until September 15, 2018 for the residents of Ponderosa Manor who lost their home in the August 9 fire. Donations will then be disbursed based upon greatest need.

We know you’re excited for the new Sparwood Skate Park, but we want to remind everyone that is not quite complete! Everyone must stay out of the fenced off construction area until it is finished
There will be landscaping work happening this weekend and hydroseeding next week and we are imploring our eager skate community to hold off just a little bit longer.
The evacuation ALERT for the Corbin area has been rescinded for 10 properties in the community of Corbin and Teck’s Coal Mountain Mine property.
The BC Wildfire Service is reporting the fire is 95% guarded and being held. It remains estimated at 30 hectares in size.

The Pool will be closed Monday August 27, Tuesday August 28, and possibly Wednesday August 29, due to replacement of the primary electrical panel in the pool mechanical room.
The fitness room, courts, climbing wall and other areas of the facility will remain open.
