Call for Youth Commission Representatives

The District of Sparwood maintains a youth commission which is responsible for overseeing the Youth Action Sparwood (YAS) initiative and we are looking for new commission members!

New Garbage Collection Service Begins September 4

Starting September 4, the District will roll out changes to its curbside garbage collection services. All household garbage will now be collected from standard 242L bear-resistant carts which are scheduled to be delivered to residents the week of August 27.

Temporary Closure: Highway 43 Pedestrian Crosswalk

This is to advise that the Pedestrian Crosswalk on Highway #43 near Aspen Drive remains closed until construction of the
new pedestrian controls for the Middletown Highway 3/43 Intersection Improvements Project are completed. Detour is available under the Highway 43 Railway Overpass. More information available here

Donations for Ponderosa Manor will be accepted up to September 15, 2018

District of Sparwood will continue to collect cash donations (cheque, debit, visa gift cards, etc.) up until September 15, 2018 for the residents of Ponderosa Manor who lost their home in the August 9 fire. Donations will then be disbursed based upon greatest need.

Evacuation ALERT in Corbin Area Rescinded

The evacuation ALERT for the Corbin area has been rescinded for 10 properties in the community of Corbin and Teck’s Coal Mountain Mine property.

The BC Wildfire Service is reporting the fire is 95% guarded and being held. It remains estimated at 30 hectares in size.

Sparwood Heights fire evacuees update

Emergency Management BC (EMBC) approved an extension of the 72-hour emergency social services assistance for the evacuees from Ponderosa Manor, building B, in Sparwood Heights.  This extension will expire on August 15, 2018 at which time the Red Cross will step in and provide whatever assistance they are able to assist residents with their recovery.

Donations for the evacuees of the Sparwood Heights fire

4:27 PM:  The Elk Valley Thrift Shop Society has generously offered to match donations towards the residents of Building B who were impacted by Thursday night's fire to a maximum of $10,000. Cash donations (cheque, debit, visa cards, etc.) will be received by the District of the Sparwood and turned over to a local non-profit for disbursement.  Funds will be provided in priority of need.

Reception Centre for Sparwood Heights fire evacuees

Reception Centre is closed and will re-open on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at 8:00 and will remain open until 6:00 pm.

Residents Affected by Sparwood Heights Fire Asked to Register with ESS

Officials with the District of Sparwood and Emergency Support Services (ESS) are asking anyone displaced by the overnight fire in Sparwood Heights to register at the ESS Reception Centre.

Firefighters and Volunteers Acknowledged For Their Efforts

Residents of Ponderosa Manor Buildings A, C and D return home

Update 7:30pm: Residents of Ponderosa Manor Apartment Buildings A, C & D are now all able to go back into their units however the units in Building D will not have hot water for the next two days.

Campfires prohibited throughout the District of Sparwood

Effective at noon Mountain time on Thursday, July 26, 2018, campfires will be prohibited throughout the Southeast Fire Centre, including the District of Sparwood, to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety.

This campfire ban will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified.

2017 Carbon Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP) Climate Action/Carbon Neutral Progress Survey

The District of Sparwood has completed the 2017 Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP) Public Report as required by the Province of BC. The CARIP Report summarizes the actions taken in 2017 and those proposed for 2018 to reduce corporate and community‐wide energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and reports on progress towards achieving carbon neutrality.

Sparwood commemorates seniors turning 75 years of age

The District of Sparwood recognizes the contribution that seniors make to our community. Those Sparwood seniors who have, or will, reach the age of 75 years this year are invited to meet with Mayor McDougall and members of Council to sign the “Senior’s Birthday Book”.
