Officials with the District of Sparwood and Emergency Support Services (ESS) are asking anyone displaced by the overnight fire in Sparwood Heights to register at the ESS Reception Centre...

Another key immediate focus is on short-term lodging and support for all those affected. As a result, the District is asking anyone who may be able to billet families or who has an RV they would be willing to let affected residents use to contact email sparwood@sparwood.ca and provide details of what they have to offer. “We have zero housing capacity in Sparwood and while we are working to identify some options, we are appealing to the community for help in the immediate short term,” says District of Sparwood CAO Terry Melcer...

Donations Update:

  1. Clothing: The Elk Valley Thrift Shop has setup a table at the Leisure Centre and can take clothing and small items (toiletries, personal items, diapers, etc) only at this time;
  2. Furniture & Other Large Items: please email sparwood@sparwood.ca with your contact information and we will be in touch you when the items are needed.
  3. Gift Cards: Are most welcome and can be dropped off at the Leisure Centre.
  4. Food: Unfortunately, we cannot accept any homemade food. Please contact the ESS Director to find out how you can help.

The donations that have come in and the volunteer response have been amazing, thank you! They don't need additional help at the Reception Centre right at this moment and it sounds like the immediate needs are being met for donations! It's best to check with Joyce Kutzner, ESS Director, at 250.425.4752 if you have anything to donate or want to help later on. Thank you everyone!


Update #1 (11:21am. Aug.09.2018):

We first want to thank all emergency personnel and volunteers who responded (and are still responding) to this incident for their hard work and dedication. Our community is amazing.

We are trying to process all the information that is coming in but for now here is some for those affected by the fire and those who want to help:

Residents of Ponderosa Manor:

  1. All those affected by the fire are asked to check in with the Emergency Social Services (ESS) team at the Reception Centre which has been opened up at the Leisure Centre (located at 367 Pine Avenue) so that you can be registered and start the process of receiving emergency funding. If you have any questions please contact the ESS Director, Joyce Kutzner at 250-425-4752.
  2. Western Financial in Sparwood (110 Centennial Street) is open to help start your claim. Even if you do not have a policy with them, you can use their phone/fax/email and ask them questions on how to start your claim. They can also issue a temporary ID if you have lost yours.
  3. The Sparwood Library is open for anyone who needs help and their computers, fax, scanning, etc. are available for your use. 
  4. Place to Play Daycare has some availability today and you can drop your children off with them if you need time to get things done. Call or text 250-425-9121. 
  5. Dee’s Pizza has offered free supper to those who lost their home, please call them directly at 250-425-0277.
  6. The Salvation Army Thrift Store in Fernie will provide you with clothing and other essential needs (up to $50). You will need to obtain a voucher from ESS at the Reception Centre.
  7. Free Clothes from the New to You Thrift Store at 127 Centennial Square.

Original Post: 12am. August 9.2018

A Reception Centre has been set up at the Leisure Centre, located at 367 Pine Avenue, to receive all people affected by the fire in Sparwood Heights. Currently Public Works and Search and Rescue vehicles are shuttling people from the Heights to the Leisure Centre, a bus is expected to arrive shortly to assist with shuttling people.

All those affected by the fire are asked to check in with Emergency Social Services at the Leisure Centre so that emergency responders will know you are safe and that everyone is accounted for. The Emergency Social Services Director, Joyce Kutzner, is available at 250-425-4752.
