Employment Opportunity: Casual Labourer for Public Works

The District of Sparwood is a friendly and welcoming community of approximately 3,800 people, nestled in the heart of the Elk Valley in the Southeast Kootenays. PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Under the general direction of the Roads & Parks Foreman, the Casual Labourer performs a variety of general and specific labour type tasks in the maintenance of District infrastructure. Working as part of a team, the Casual Labourer assists other employees engaged in installation, maintenance and repair of roads, sidewalks, parks, sewer and water systems. Additional responsibilities can include digging and backfilling trenches and graves by hand, picking up and disposing of litter, general cleaning and basic maintenance as well as other related duties as assigned. The Casual Labourer also may operate light trucks, small tractors, mowers, edgers, trimmers, power saws, steam cleaners, various hand tools and miscellaneous equipment.

The Casual Labourer works as a member of the crew, requiring a cooperative team effort.

EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE:
• Grade 12 or equivalent
• Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES / WORK DEMANDS:
• Good interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to work well as a member of a team and independently
• Ability to understand and carry out job related instructions
• Ability to continuously use hand tools, lift heavy objects, work in awkward positions, stand and walk throughout the day; occasionally work in confined spaces, and frequently work in inclement weather.

This position is a unionized position under CUPE local 2698. The 2019 hourly wage rate is $26.78/hour as per the current collective agreement.

As part of the interview process, shortlisted candidates will be required to participate in a practical portion of the interview at the District of Sparwood Public Works Yard.
