50th Anniversary of the Balmer North Explosion

April 3rd, 2017 will mark the 50th anniversary of the Balmer North mine explosion

Fifteen men lost their lives, resulting in an incredible impact on many communities in our area. This tragedy left families without sons, brothers, fathers, uncles and forever changed our small communities.

The ‘Balmer North Committee’ wants to honour these men, and all other coal miners that have lost their lives working at any of the Elk Valley coal mines. Sculptor, Nathan Scott, has been commissioned to create a life-sized bronze coal miner to commemorate their sacrifice.

Events on April 3, 2017 will include:

  • Unveiling of the Bronze Statue & Memorial Wall;
  • Remembrance ceremony of all miners who have lost their lives working at any of the Elk Valley coal mines; and
  • Presentation by historian John Kinnear
