The current hot, dry and windy conditions have caused an increase in fire behaviour for some modified response fires burning in the east Kootenay. This information bulletin is an update on the status of the fires in the east Kootenay as of September 5, 2017.

Effective at noon Pacific Time on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017, all Crown land within the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District is closed to public access due to the extreme fire danger rating, the number of unprecedented aggressive wildfires throughout the region and moderate winds forecasted over the next few days.
The District is advising residents that there will be no garbage pick up on Labour Day, Monday September 4, 2017. Garbage that is normally picked up on the Monday will be picked up on Tuesday, September 5, 2017.

The newsletter, released by BC Wildfire Service on August 26, 2017, provides the public with an update on this year’s fire season, road closures, off-road travel and backroad restrictions, fire bans and permits, hunting, and tips on collecting firewood.
Effective immediately (Aug. 18, 2017) this closure applies to the White River Forest Service Road starting at the 32-kilometre mark and the White-East Fork Forest Service Road starting at the 60-kilometre mark. This means that no vehicles are permitted on these sections of road apart from industrial traffic.

Council received a compiled report of the feedback received from the 2017 Citizen Satisfaction Survey identifying the key findings, emerging trends from the previous survey conducted in 2015, and recommendations to address the comments received from the 216 households which completed the survey.
The Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the Interior Health Authority, has expanded the Smoky Skies Bulletin issued on Saturday 8th July due to forest fire smoke that is covering the area. The areas now covered are: Kinbasket, North Columbia, West Columbia, East Columbia Yoho Park- Kootenay Park, East Kootenay, West Kootenay, Elk Valley, Kootenay Lake, Arrow Lakes – Slocan Lake, Boundary, Okanagan, Similkameen, Nicola, Fraser Canyon, South Thompson, North Thompson, 100 Mile, Cariboo (North and South), and Chilcotin.
District of Sparwood Staff are exploring the option of creating one or more off-leash dog parks in Sparwood to provide an area for dog owners to let their dogs off-leash.
