Municipal Land Disposition Info-Sheet

The District of Sparwood has created an information sheet for residents who are considering submitting requests to purchase municipal lands. These requests have increased, in part, as a result of the encroachment enforcement initiative that the District began in 2017 and which shall continue in 2018. It is not the District’s intent to sell off municipal greenbelts/open space, however, in some rare circumstances it may be appropriate. Any resident who may be considering submitting a request to purchase municipal land should review the Municipal Land Disposition Policy and the info-sheet for eligibility prior to submitting a request.

District staff would like to thank residents who received encroachment notices and who have taken the necessary steps to achieve compliance or have provided staff with their timeline for removing their encroachments. Response towards this initiative has been positive and we look forward to continuing to work with property owners towards reaching a solution. The District has many enforcement tools to remove encroachments from District land in the event that agreement cannot be reached.

The District of Sparwood is responsible for providing stewardship of the community’s public assets, and as a public steward, we are responsible for protecting our parks, open space/greenspace and public reserves to ensure that they are used and enjoyed by all citizens as originally developed and intended.
