The Public Hearing regarding the proposed amendment to the M-1 Light Industrial zone which began on December 4, 2017 has been adjourned to reconvene at the regular meeting on January 15, 2018, at 7:00pm in Council Chambers, to provide District staff with additional time to consult with property owners that may be impacted by the proposed change and obtain their feedback on the new options for Council’s consideration.

The District of Sparwood has commenced work on locating a new community drinking water supply, near Cummings Creek. Work is proceeding, funded by Teck, in consultation with the Interior Health Authority and regulations of the Ministry of Environment & Climate Change Strategy.
Reporting to the Director of Community & Facility Services, lifeguards are responsible for the safe supervision of the public in the aquatics centre. The incumbent supervises and ensures the safety of pool users in accordance with established safety guidelines, provides lifesaving skills including first aid, resuscitation and other emergency revival techniques as required; Plans, organizes leads special events within the pool area as assigned; Provides and ensures proper day to day maintenance and cleanliness of pool and surrounding areas such as deck and changing rooms.
We are witnessing more and more trucks coming into Sparwood who are failing to properly clean their vehicles before leaving the mine site and as a result, the community is seeing deposits of coal left behind on our roads, private driveways and parking lots.

The District of Sparwood is seeking the public's feedback on Cemetery Management Bylaw 1017. The new bylaw, if adopted, will replace Rivercrest Cemetery Bylaw 877 and Elk Valley (Michel) Cemetery Operation and Maintenance Bylaw 831. Changes include the prohibition against pets being permitted in either cemetery, larger floral receptacles in Rivercrest Cemetery, regulations surrounding adornments at Rivercrest Cemetery, and updates to the fees and charges for both cemeteries.
Council will be considering allowing commercial businesses and multi-family developments to contract their own garbage pick-up at the September 5, 2017 regular meeting.
FRIDAY, JULY 7, 2017, SPARWOOD, BC – Effective 6:00 pm Mountain time on Friday, July 7, 2017, campfires will be prohibited throughout the Southeast Fire Centre, including the District of Sparwood, to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety.
This campfire ban will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified.
The District of Sparwood has initiated an Alternate Approval Process, otherwise known as a counter-petition, to obtain elector approval to enter into a 10-Year Lease Agreement with School District #5 for 1351 Ponderosa Drive for the installation of a multi-use outdoor facility to replace the tennis and basketball courts located in the Cherrywood subdivision.

The District of Sparwood is advising residents that road line painting work will be starting the night of June 26 and will continue each night until July 3. The District is requesting that residents please move vehicles off public roads in the evenings to avoid interfering with the line painting work. The District office will be recognizing Friday June 30th as our Canada Day Statutory Holiday and the office will be closed. We will be open as usual on Monday July 3rd – Don’t forget! Taxes are Due Tuesday July 4th, 2017. Penalties apply for any outstanding balances after July 4th.
The District of Sparwood has introduced three new LED illuminated crosswalks. The District opted to go with solar powered LED crosswalks. The lights have dual panels to ensure batteries are charged efficiently and in an environmentally friendly manner.
BC Hydro requires a five-hour outage to complete maintenance work on the transformer at the Sparwood Substation. The outage is needed so they can switch the substation’s transformer.
The outage is scheduled for five hours on Sunday, June 25 from 2 to 7 am MDT. It will affect approximately 2,700 customers in the town of Sparwood, Sparwood Heights and the Lower Elk Valley Road; Highway 3 from Sparwood Transfer Staion, east to Michel Creek Road; and north on Highway 43 to Bursato Road.

The report will be presented and reviewed by Council at a special meeting on Monday, June 26, 2017 at 7:00 pm. The District of Sparwood has completed the 2016 Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP) Public Report as required by the Province of BC. The CARIP Report summarizes the actions taken in 2016 and those proposed for 2017 to reduce corporate and community‐wide energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and reports on progress towards achieving carbon neutrality.
