Toboggan Hill Closed

Due to low snow conditions, the toboggan hill is currently closed for the season We thank you for your understanding and hope to see you out enjoying the hill again next winter!

Middletown Crossing Construction Beginning

Construction for the Middletown Crossing project will begin in April. Projex, the firm awarded the contract for the project, have finished the bulk of their construction equipment mobilization and are gearing up to begin earthworks on the southwest portion of the site in April. It is anticipated that the earthworks for the southwest portion will be finished by the end of April.

Community Cleanup 2018

**UPDATE** Event date changed to May 6 due to snow still on trails and parks.

The District of Sparwood is challenging local clubs, workplaces, and families to come out on Sunday, May 6, from 10 am to 1pm, for our fifth annual Sparwood Community Cleanup to help clean up the garbage that has accumulated throughout the winter. Click here to see the event on Facebook.

Notice of Meeting: 2018 Parcel Tax Review Panel

A meeting of the Parcel Tax Review Panel will take place on Monday, April 30, 2018 at 6:45 p.m. in Council Chambers, 136 Spruce Avenue, Sparwood, BC, regarding the following bylaws:

  • Sewer and Water Reserve Replenishment Parcel Tax Assessment Roll Bylaw 1091, 2012
  • Michel Creek Road Water Extension Local Service Area Parcel Tax Assessment Roll Bylaw 1122, 2013

Street Sweeping

The District of Sparwood’s spring street sweeping program is underway. The purpose of the program is to remove sanding material and debris that has accumulated on roads and boulevards from winter road maintenance.

Residential Spring Cleanup

Residential spring cleanup begins Tuesday May 22, 2018. Any person wishing to take advantage of this service is required to register at the District Office no later than Friday May 18th, 2018 and pay the required fee of $20.00.

Transportation of Coal from Elkview to Coal Mountain Operations

From Saturday March 24 to approximately Monday April 9, Teck will be transporting raw coal from Elkview Operations along Highway 3 and Corbin Road to be processed at Coal Mountain Operations processing plant. Coal is being transported to Coal Mountain in order to use the existing facilities there and optimize operations across the Elk Valley.

SLASH PILE BURNING TO TAKE PLACE ON MIDDLETOWN SITE

In preparation for the work to commence on the Middletown – Highway 3/43 Intersection Improvements project, Fiorentino Bros Contracting Ltd will soon be burning the remaining slash piles from the 2017 clearing for BC Hydro’s Access Trail.  As such, there will be smoke created, and we ask residents not to be alarmed.

COMMUNITY TO COMMUNITY FORUM IN QUKIN ʔAMAKʔIS

The District of Sparwood and Ktunaxa Nation are collaborating to host a Community to Community Forum for representatives from local government within QUKIN ʔAMAKʔIS (Raven’s Land). This is the first event of its kind in the Elk Valley where leaders from Elkford, Fernie, Sparwood, the Regional District of East Kootenay and the Ktunaxa Nation will gather to explore what reconciliation means to them.

Garbage Pickup - Easter Holiday Break

Due to the two statutory holidays, Good Friday and Easter Monday, there will be no garbage pickup scheduled. Garbage that would normally be picked up on Friday, March 30th will be picked up on Thursday, March 29th and garbage that would normally be picked up on Monday, April 2nd will be picked up on Tuesday, April 3rd.

District staff have released the annual Vacancy Rate Report and Building Permit Reports. These reports detail the current residential vacancy rate and building permits issued in the previous year.

Special Public Avalanche Warning for Interior BC Ranges

Special Public Avalanche Warning in effect immediately until the end of the day Monday, February 12, 2018.

Avalanche Canada issued a Special Public Avalanche Warning for recreational backcountry users, in effect immediately until the end of the day Monday, February 12. The warning applies to the following regions: Lizard Range & Flathead, South Rockies, Purcells, Kootenay Boundary, South & North Columbia, Cariboos, and North Rockies. 2018-2022 Financial Plan Public Open House

If you live in Sparwood, you are invited to a Public Budget Consultation Meeting that will be held to discuss the District’s Financial Plan for the next five years. Council invites and encourages the public to attend and provide feedback that will assist Council in setting priorities for our community.

This event occurred on Tuesday, February 27th from 3:00 – 5:00 pm at Council Chambers.

The Sparwood Fire Service would like to send our condolences to Captain Murrell’s family and our Brother Fire Fighters at the Cranbrook Fire Department.

Occasion :
Death of Captain Clayton Murrell from the Cranbrook Fire Department, British Columbia, who passed away on February 3, 2018 as the result of a motor vehicle incident. Captain Murrell was a 25-year member with the Cranbrook Fire Department.
